MotoMeds: Expanding Access to Pediatric Nighttime Care

MotoMeds Ghana provides families with access to trained emergency medical technicians (EMT) from the Ghana National Ambulance Service through a dedicated call center during nighttime hours, when traditional health facilities are often inaccessible or closed. EMTs on motorbikes deliver life-saving medications directly to patients’ homes, ensuring timely treatment for children with common yet potentially dangerous conditions such as respiratory infections, malaria, and diarrhea.

This model has already shown remarkable promise in improving outcomes and reducing unnecessary hospital visits. MotoMeds Ghana launched its most recent site in January of 2025 in the city of Tamale in northern Ghana — a region with significant gaps in pediatric nighttime care.

We are thrilled to share that GHCC is now assuming leadership of the Tamale site, working hand-in-hand with local partners, clinicians, and community leaders to ensure the service continues to grow sustainably and responsibly.

Millions of children in low-resource settings face barriers to care at night — from distance and cost, to lack of transportation and limited facility hours. MotoMeds addresses this challenge directly by:

• Reducing delays in seeking care
• Improving access to appropriate medication
• Lowering out-of-pocket costs for families
